Mahindra will be launching the new 2023 Mahindra Thar 5-door in the next few months and will position it as a practical and family-friendly off-roader in India

The Mahindra Thar is currently one of the best-selling 4X4 SUVs in the country and is known for its strong capabilities and practical cabin. Ever since the launch, the new second-gen Thar has been one of the most successful launches ever for Mahindra and surpassed the 1 lakh production-unit milestone last month. The brand is now all geared up to launch the new Thar 5-door in the country to take on the rivals like the Maruti Suzuki Jimny and the Force Gurkha 5-door. If you are also planning to soon buy a new off-roader soon, here are the top 5 things you should know about the upcoming Mahindra Thar 5-door SUV.

Design And Styling Updates

While the new 5-door iteration will retain a similar design language as the three-door version save for a number of changes like new body panels, exclusive alloy wheels, a longer wheelbase, and a revised track for better stability. We are also expecting the new Thar to be offered with a pillar-mounted handle for the rear door. Having said this, the new Thar 5-Door will continue to boast a box design along with round headlamps, flared wheel arches, and tailgate-mounted spare wheel.

New Features And New Cabin Layout

Just like the exterior design, the dashboard layout and the cabin of the new five-door version are likely to retain a similar layout as the Thar three-door but we are expecting the brand to introduce several new features like a front armrest, a sunglass holder, and a new infotainment system. The Indian carmaker might also offer its latest AdrenoX system. A longer wheelbase will also help in freeing up more space inside the cabin and the test mules spotted on testing featured individual rear seats in the second row. The brand might also offer a bench seat in the second row.

Powertrain Options

Just like the present version, the new Thar 5-Door will be offered with a wide range of powertrain options. To start with, the brand is likely to offer the new Thar with 2.2L diesel and 2.0L turbo petrol engine options. Both these engines will be offered with a six-speed manual as well as automatic gearbox options. Likewise, the Thar will be offered with both 4WD as well as RWD options.

Expected Price

From what we know so far, the new five-door Thar will be around Rs 2-2.5 lakh more expensive than the equivalent three-door versions. This means that while the manual RWD versions will be priced from Rs 12-13 lakh (ex-showroom), the AWD versions will be priced from Rs 15-16 lakh (ex-showroom). The brand will be announcing the official launch price soon after the debut of the five-door version.

Launch Date In India

The new Thar 5-Door is likely to make its official debut in the country in late 2023 and will go on sale at the same time. Once launched, it will be the brand’s seventh body-on-frame SUV in the country and will take on the rivals like the upcoming Force Gurkha 5-door.
