2022 Toyota Hilux Review – The Best Pick-Up So Far?

The 2022 Toyota Hilux price in India starts from Rs 33.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) and is available in three trim options – STD MT, High MT, and High AT.

Toyota recently launched the new Toyota Hilux in the Indian market and is one of the very few pick-up trucks in the country that offers a premium and a feature-rich cabin, stellar looks, and a powerful and capable powertrain. With rivals like the Isuzu V-Cross already in the market, how good is the 2022 Toyota Hilux 4X4 Diesel Automatic? Here is our official review where we talk about most of your questions.

What We Like

  1. Strong Road Presence And Stellar Looks
  2. Powerful And Reliable Powertrain
  3. Aftersales Support

What Could Have Been Better

  1. Rear-Seat Experience Is Average
  2. The Build-Quality Could Have Been Better
  3. Expensive When Compared To The Rivals

It Will Break Necks On The Roads!

For starters, the new 2022 Toyota Hilux in India is offered in five exterior colour options – Emotional Red, White Pearl Crystal Shine, Silver Metallic, Super White, and Grey Metallic. Having said this, the Hilux does command a strong road presence and the front fascia is largely dominated by a big bold chrome grille flanked by projector headlights on either side.

Needless to say, a high-set hood and a high ground clearance do help the pick-up look massive on the road while the side profile too complements the overall character. The R-18 multi-spoke alloy wheels finished in the grey metal shade look good and might remind you of the Fortuner.

The rear however is rather simple and gets elegant taillights, a prominent Hilux badge, and a subtle bumper. As expected, the panel gaps are tight and the paint quality too is decent.

The Cabin Looks Good, But…

The Toyota Hilux boasts an impressive dashboard layout and is loaded with a long list of features. To start with, the Hilux is available with automatic climate control, push-button start, a touchscreen-infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a cooled glovebox, driver central arm-rest with a storage console, power windows, and more. The leather-wrapped steering feels not only feels nice to hold but also gets a number of multi-functional buttons.

While the front seats are comfortable, the rear seat bench is not as good. For starters, the recline angle is a little too upright and the legroom too is not great either. The front seats however offer better space. The cushioning too is decent if not great. Having said this, the visibility from inside the cabin is good and the fit-finish levels too are commendable. In all, the Hilux offers a decent cabin but it is the rear seat that could have been better.

It Is Powerful And Capable…

The Hilux gets a 2.7-L diesel engine that churns out 204 PS while the rated torque stands at 420 Nm and 500 Nm for manual and automatic variants respectively. The buyers can opt for a six-speed intelligent manual or a six-speed automatic gearbox. Needless to say, a 4X4 drivetrain is offered with both the transmission options. While I was happy with the refinement and power output from the engine, the NVH levels could have been better. A detailed test drive report will be live once we spend more time with this pick-up truck.

2022 Toyota Hilux Review – Final Verdict

With the launch of the Hilux in India, the buyers now have an option to go for a premium, feature-rich, capable, and practical pick-up truck that is not only good for off-roading and navigating through difficult terrains, but is as good if used as a daily commuter. While many may not find the price to be as VFM as other SUVs, it is the Hilux that will keep the buyers happy with its long-term reliability and ownership experience. In short, the Hilux is a great alternative for anyone considering the Isuzu V-Cross as their next purchase.
